Music Tastes
« on: February 02, 2015, 02:53:27 PM »
So I've been wondering, essentially what's in the title of this thread.  What are people's musical tastes here?

Personally, I'm a hopeless anime lover, and get sucked in by most opening themes and some ending themes.  Mostly all J-rock type stuff.  In terms of lyrics, this is probably the only "genre" of music that I listen to that actually has any vocals on it.  The rest is pretty much all electronic.

Also, I'm a huge rhythm gamer (see, flashflashrevolution), and have picked up a love for IIDM (artists like The Flashbulb), and alot of hardcore (terminal 11, dev/null) and j-core (t+pazolite, DJ Sharpnel, kors k), and anything with complex moving parts (xi)

I'll probably go link to some of my favorite songs once I get the access to music, because I think it's a lot easier explaining musical taste through examples.

This is a very personal subject for me. Music has played a very big role in my life, and I probably wouldn't be here today if it weren't for some of the music that I felt I could relate to and play myself. Music holds a special place in my heart, and I believe it's through the arts that humanity puts on its best show.My grandmother, who was an accomplished painter in our community, has these final words for her family: "Art is important, and beautiful in life. Cherish it more than all other professions, because an artist gives you a piece of themselves that you can hold with you forever. Never forget: we are remembered by the works we leave behind."

I'm probably going to be the one person on this entire board that everyone else is going to say, "WHAT!? You like THAT!?!?!?" EW!!!! But I digress. Let me preface this post by saying my tastes are varied and complex for any number of reasons (this won't make sense later, but may make sense from what I have divulged already).

Growing up, my mom used to listen to some very soft smooth new age shit on her thingy player I have no idea what it was. Think Enya, or that shit song by donna lewis (I love you, always forever), and this shit was blasted constantly in my house. So it's infected me and my psychological musical tastes. Things I like:

Classical:
Beethoven - especially the 7th and 9th symphonies, and moonlight sonata (yes, the whole thing) Also, the Ode An Die Freude has a special place in my life.
Bach - just about anything but I have a special love of the fugues and passacaglias. Don't care much for the chorale shit.
Mozart - Let's just all take a second and appreciate the bad assery and douchebaggery that was Mozart. I mean, the guy wrote a song titled, "Lick My Ass."
Scandinavian Composers - (Grieg especially). I love his Peer Gynt and Piano Concertos. So relaxing.
Handel's Messiah. Dude was a genius.

Rock/Pop: (this is where y'all are gonna hate me.)
SO....I like One Direction, but only a few songs! Steal my Girl, What Makes You Beautiful (T which I've written a mashup with "Shut Up And Dance" by Walk The Moon), 5 Seconds of Summer, The Vamps, and yes, Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Breaking Benjamin, Adele, Avicii, Avril Lavigne....I could go on and on, but I do like a lot of modern stuff.

Instrumental/I-Vocal:
Piano works
Cello -- Jim Brickman's "Bittersweet" will impress your ladies when accompanied by a candlelit dinner, hint hint fellas ;)
Yiruma - River Flows In You
Shit by Enya (Thanks mom!)...again
Josh Groban - ::swoon:: - ugh his voice......makes me wet haha
That stupid "Return to Innocence" song.
David Lanz

Vocal Only: (A Capella)
Pentatonix
My Own Vocal Group I had (Sweet Modulation. I may get brave enough and post some of our stuff some day, if anyone's interested. It was a group I co-founded).
Peter Hollens
Nick Pitera

As an Actor, I also love pretty much all musical theater, but some of my favorite music would have to be:
American Idiot
Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables
Next To Normal (Can you tell me...What it is you're afraid of...Can you tell me why I'm afraid it's me...)
RENT
Book of Mormon
My Fair Lady
Disney Songs too (Frozen...yes...I already know! Trust me, I'm not gonna build a snowman...right now at least).

I love a lot of classic rock too, like Journey, Boston, Steelheart, Whitesnake, etc. 80's Hair Bands and their accompanying power ballads.

My tastes span all genres, and I can usually find something I like in pretty much everything. As long as it has a decent melody and interesting harmonics, I'm all about it.

My tastes are extremely varied.

"...'Cause I'm holding on, and I won't let go, I just thought you should know! I am the one who loves you! I am the one who cares. I am the one who's always been there...And if you think that I just don't give a damn, well you just don't know who I am."

That's pretty much my answer in a nutshell. I like pretty much some of everything, but mainly classic soul/R&B (60s-80s), jazz, Bob Marley-era reggae, and even some classic rock.

The classic rock was kind of a revelation pretty similar to what JayHawk stated. I grew up with my mother keeping the car radio glued to an oldies station that was continually shuffling their lineup, and at one point they played plenty of classic rock. I'd groan when it came on, irritated that even when the radio was on another station playing a song my mom was singing along with, once she realized the station had been changed she's switch back to good old WCBS, which would invariably be playing some old dusty rock.

Years later, on a Black Friday afternoon, I'm driving around New Jersey somewhere, and start fiddling with the radio. I hit a station playing Elvis. I glance over and see 104.3 and immediately I'm wondering who plays Elvis in the middle of the day, in the middle of the dial? Next is Led Zeppelin or some such, and then the DJ comes on saying it's the yearly Rock Countdown, and as more and more songs played I' m like "I know that song!" Then when Amazon Music (and later Youtube  ;) ) I started adding that stuff to my collection.

I'm not sure what drew me to the classic jazz, since much of it is before my time, but I'm sure the attraction to classic soul and even classic rock is about nostalgia...  8-)

Yep I am Daikyi. I used to have my own group that I co-founded with a friend, but she moved to Taiwan so we had to break up the group. I have some recordings though, and at some point I think I can probably post a link to it or something, if anyone's interested. Nice to meet a fellow A Capella fan.

I'm the same way, Daikyi! The first song I ever downloaded for a CD or MP3 player was, Cruel Angel Thesis from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Even before then though, I always loved anime music. More so than that, I'm a huge video game and movie soundtrack fan. Mainly since I write and draw, its like I can give my thoughts their own soundtrack and help me create.

I do listen to almost anything though except country or rap. There's some I like, but overall I'm not a fan of them. Like a few of us, I got the rest of my music taste from my parents and some from my older brothers as well. I could list things, but that would take forever. If hear something I like, than I listen to it.

I'm pretty certain I would go absolutely insane if I couldn't listen to music. I have earphones in for a minimum of an hour a day. Anytime I can use them, I do. I love music :)

I'm mostly into European or Scandinavian metal but I'll tolerate the radio's affinity for the mainstream, I don't listen to music that often anyways.

Here's a cute little list of who I listen too and why:

Rammstein (Anything they do is good) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIvXxU7aqf4
Sabaton (Power Metal and some Rock) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URf7eA_aajs
Iron Maiden (Heavy Metal) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQI3zS1R9jg
Korpiklaani (Folk Metal) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcNtKpnBNUw

For the last few years Sabaton was my favorite band but since I have heard all their songs so many times I'm drifting towards Rammstein and Korpiklaani
