Creating solutions...
« on: July 30, 2015, 05:50:22 AM »
Hi, gang. I have some news that's probably not going to surprise anyone:

I no longer have the resource base to maintain the server.
In addition, my stream software no longer wants to work, and I'm tired of fighting technology just so I can enjoy my razor-thin slice of leisure-time-per-day.

I feel like I've given this whole thing plenty of time to grow and a lot of love in its early years--but I just don't have the energy or time to do it alone anymore. So for the dozen or so people who still come around--thank you for your support over the years, and I'm sorry. I just can't pay for this stuff anymore.

Unless I figure out some other way to run this, things will run until late December, when my hosting contract expires. I'm open to ideas about trying to maintain it beyond that in the 5 months we have left, but I can no longer do it alone.

There is still a lot of free hosting out there.  Perhaps it's just that since the community is so small it just won't grow to anything beyond what it is currently.  I know that I have experience in web coding and design so I could always help on that end, but I understand that this is more of a funding issue rather than a maintenance/design issue.  I can't imagine that it costs that much to keep this website up and running, but maybe you could let us know exactly what the site will need to stay alive so we can start to help anyway we can whether it be funding wise, or with anything else you might need.  If we want this place to stay alive I'm sure that the people that do come around here will be willing to help in any way that they can.  I know that I will/want to.

I'd be interested as well in contributing in more ways than one, if possible. I wouldn't mind that at all. Of course, if that's not feasible or if you've decided that everything has run its course, then I suppose that's that. I understand there's a lot more involved than simple monetary issues (daily maintenance being a huge factor too, I'm sure).

In the end, I'll be supportive of whatever decision you do make.

Thanks, guys.

I'm more than happy to give the crowdfund a shot. I'm going to--against my idiotic sense of pride--start a Patreon.
The opening goal will be to save the server.

I know there's free hosting out there, but A.CF and MM have never had an advertising banner, and I want that experience to continue.
Right now I'm set up as a dedicated server split with a partner, and I'd like to keep it that way. I like having control over my own box, its settings, and how it runs.

I've put a lot of time and love into my stories and to have an ad-free place for other folks to post. If everyone reading this is willing to put together a spirit bomb of $85/month, I will keep the server running without fail.

Beyond that, maybe there's a goal where I promise hard schedules for updates. Beyond that, maybe there are enough crazy lurkers out there to buy me out of my job and have me streaming art and live writing 14 hours a day. XD

The last one's a pipe dream, but really--it wouldn't take long to get to $85 in chunks of $2, $3, or $5 a month.
I'll make an announcement on the site on August 1st, once I've worked out goals and contribution tiers for the Patreon.

In the meantime, gang--a gesture of good faith from your old buddy--the one who used to fuckin write stuff...

I will update the site every two weeks until the end of the year, starting this Sunday. I haven't been the greatest host in the last year, so I'm also going to announce a stream calendar AND a couple accounts on Tumblr, to which I'll be steadily adding my showcase of drawings AND photomanips.

I've always loved doing this stuff--that's how this place started. I want to do more and more of it, but the paths are diverging.
My real job is getting harder and pulling more of my attention. It's making me boring and business-minded.

Save me. Save my creative spirit. Save my wordsmithing.

I put forward the effort on the stream for the first half of the year.
For the back half, I'm going to put forward the effort on bringing you regular art and writing.

From there, you guys can decide.
I'll be streaming on Picarto tomorrow night if I can get this other broadcasting software working.
If anyone has any questions, ideas, or things they'd like to add to any of the above, I'll be around to field your thoughts.

ALSO WORTH SAYING:
50% of any art commissions, from now until the server is secure, will go to the server fund.

WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN:
So like, if you buy a $60 commish, it means $30 goes to bread and roof and $30 goes to the server.

So that means the math is also like this: if I do $170 in art-commissions a month (and yes, I realize yours is taking a while, Jay--this is what I'm seeking to cure with the SCHEDULE I'm planning :D) the server would also effectively be saved.

More news on this soon--likely tomorrow during the broadcast.
I'll send an update before I stream.

All sounds amazing man. I'll be looking forward to the post.  Also I wouldn't worry too much about sticking to a set schedule.  Things in the outside world happen and we all know that.  Not gonna say I'd be mad seeing all these updates, but just make sure you leave enough time for you/wife/fam/friends/job always.

I just realized...I can't set up a Patreon.
This is all essentially considered porn, isn't it? :o

Is there something else I should do, or should I just go for the Patreon thing anyway?

I'll be honest I'm not sure what patreon is, but you have paypal don't you?  I'm really not sure what the protocol is for setting up gofundme's and stuff like that with the content on the site.  If the people here could just donate through paypal I'm sure that's good enough.

Seeking out solutions...
« Reply #7 on: August 01, 2015, 05:06:00 PM »
Bornox, I do have paypal. I can set up a button on the site. I should be setting up every path available, I suppose!

There IS an NSFW on Patreon for things like adult comics, etc.
I think we fall into that category since most of my stuff is writing anyway.

So I've set that up: https://www.patreon.com/Vestiphile?ty=h

But I've also put a donation button on the front per your request.
I do like the idea of the Patreon because it lets everyone know where we stand, but I'm not going to be picky.

Thanks!

Just so you are aware the button on the site does not go anywhere, just thought I would let you know!  but as soon as the link is up I will be donating.

Wow, you guys are awesome. On the first day, we've paid for more than half of January.
I don't want to jinx anything, but I'm terribly grateful! We're on the way.  ;)

I totally owe you guys a chapter today. I'll post in the updates when it's ready--shooting for like 3PM EDT!

Just stopped by the Patreon site and contributed a monthly amount (I really hope I did that right). It makes you "Feel Great to Donate!" LOL, but seriously, I'm glad I can support in any way I can.
